As Powerboat Nation reported last week, Stu Jones of the Florida Powerboat Club is preparing to take some of his members to the Bahamas Sept. 28-30 for the latest Bimini Blast event. At the same time, he is recruiting an additional 40-50 participants to the group’s 26th Annual Key West Offshore Poker Run, slated for Nov. 6-12.

The Key West event, which is available for pre-registration only, has already attracted about 120 boats, with room for about 40-50 more to sign up before the limit is reached. “It’s filling up fast,” says Jones, the group’s intrepid leader. “It’s our biggest event, and all of the leading manufacturers are represented as sponsors. It’s a pretty big deal for us.”

The seven-day format, which allows for multiple departures on Wednesday and Thursday, will take participants from Miami to the Southernmost city to observe the Super Boat Offshore World Championship races on Friday and Sunday.

According to Jones, the Key West poker run typically attracts between 25% and 35% of newcomer participation. “That’s simply because it’s what I like to call a ‘bucket list’ poker run,” he says. “Regardless of how far people have to travel, this event is on their list. They trailer in from as far away as California or Washington or even Canada—people are literally traversing the continent to come to Florida to do this event.”

The Key West run is an ideal event to see the entire cross-section of East Coast muscleboats: MTI, Outerlimits, Fountain, Donzi, Skater, Sunsation, Cigarette, Mystic, Doug Wright, Nor-Tech, Deep Impact, Sonic, Apache and more—and you might even see a West Coast boat or two.

Meanwhile, Jones reports on the success of his summer Emerald Coast Poker Run, which helped raise around $70,000 to benefit three main charities:

Alaqua Animal Refuge, a no-kill facility located on a sprawling and bucolic 10-acre farm in Freeport, FL, committed to providing protection, shelter and care to animals in need.

Fisher House of the Emerald Coast, a nonprofit that provides free housing for military families while a service member undergoes medical treatment; families can stay as long and as often as they need.

Food for Thought Outreach, an organization delivers about 3,000 meals a week to lower income families in the Okaloosa County area (which is where FPC staged the event).

Stu Jones has been associated with the Emerald Coast Poker Run for more than 15 years, but hearing him tell the story of the event’s metamorphosis is a genuine eye-opener—a tale rife with local politics. Originally, he ran the event in a partnership with another organization. But when the two factions began to work at cross purposes—FPC being more of an elite, VIP group—Jones ended the alliance and started fresh, with full control over registrations, course, checkpoints, safety, etc.

“It was tremendously unsafe,” he says about how the event had transformed before breaking away. “They had a lot of slower boats; there were some close calls and a couple of accidents. There were a lot of unhappy people, and some overcrowded parties, and it created a lot of issues. The complaints were coming in rapidly—I felt like I had a mutiny on my hands. So I sent out a very detailed survey to everybody, and more than half of the people replied. Their answers were pretty much unanimous: Run your own event, keep it upscale and do it on a weekend when it’s not so busy.”

So Jones relaunched the event, seized full control and moved the date to a week later. His first order of business was classing up the format and implementing strict safety guidelines. “I charged a little bit more for it; I got 90 boats to register, got a lot of sponsors and a lot of people happy to make donations for the event. It was one of the biggest challenges in my career, dealing with this whole situation, but I fought through it. We’ve moved forward, and we’re happy with the outcome.”

By now you all know we have been intimately involved in the concept, planning, build, and final delivery of Chris and Angela Bradleys 1950 HP Goodwin Competition 388 Skater.  Since the delivery I have been able to get a little seat time running and while we haven’t pushed beyond 170 MPH (yet) we have had lots of time just boating around and having fun.

At the dock the boat is getting rave reviews, everyone who sees it loves it!  The paint, the interior, the absolutely over the top engines spilling out of the back are hard to miss.  The really cool and interesting thing is how well the boat is being received by everyone who sees it.  Many observers have stated how they like how tasteful and well done the appearance of this boat is and how striking it is on the water.   So far it really has been a home run as the boat has preformed incredibly well.  The Goodwin 1950 Semi Hemi Engines are truly a work of art and have proven to indescribable as the only way to understand them is to run them.   The boat starts, runs, shifts, docks, and most of all accelerates into the horizon like no other!

To be completely transparent we have had some issues but they are all related to  power supply and alternator issues which when you consider the complexity of this build are pretty minor.

Check out the video and pictures and of course we will have more to come later on this incredible boat.

This was the 25th Year for the Emerald Coast Poker Run and the 25th Anniversary for the Florida Powerboat Club.  I have attended this great event for the past 10 years and time sure does fly as I have seen the event go from well over 200 boats down to only a few and now it’s back up over 200.  One thing for sure is that the emerald Coat Poker Run will continue on and could possible grow to be even bigger than we have ever imagined.

Florida Powerboat Club President Mr. Stu Jones said he event was really good and now they have a good problem to fix.  How do you manage an event that has grown so big and has such a wide variety of boats.  With the introduction of the Ruby class this Coast Guard permitted event has everything from Personal Water Craft all to Catamarans cable of speeds reaching beyond 170 MPH.

In order to have a great event Stu is proposing to break the event up to cover a two week Boat Week celebration in Destin.  The Ruby class would go one week ahead of the FPC Performance Boat Class featuring all the higher performance boats and give them a chance to run and enjoy the Emerald Coast separately.   Stu has already spoken to the local sponsors and has all the support to break the event up to keep is safer and allow each class to grow and spread the event out over back to back weekends which will bring greater revenue to the area.

FPC will create a more upscale event for all the Florida Powerboat Club Members who travel from far and away to come to the area, many Texas and Florida teams as well as guys like Cass Tucker who trailered his 353 Formula almost 1000 miles from Virginia to go boating along with Emerald Coast with the Florida Powerboat Club! The FPC members would then have the opportunity to enjoy a  first class event and it will  raise additional money for local charities.

This year the  Florida Powerboat Club Sponsors had very strong representation in the Performance Center Console Class with Nor-Tech Powerboats bringing two 39 footers, Deep Impact brought their quad powered 360 Sport and Midnight Express was on hand as well with a new 39. Of course I was driving the 41 CIGARETTE with Mercury 1100 to round out the Performance Center Console Class.

Always a huge charity event this year the expected final amount raised will be around $140K and a big congratulations to Florida Powerboat Club Members Brad Hancock and Eileen Fisher who both finished first at their respective final tables.   Brad Hancock won the Ford F150 after he bought in to the final table at  $12.5K and Eileen won the final hand at the Ruby table taking home a brand new  Harley Davidson 750 Street.  Congratulations to all!

When we see new boats released and showcased they always look great and you can imagine what it would be like to actually be able to run one.  Well, this past weekend at the Emerald Coast Poker Run I was privileged enough to get that opportunity.

Waiting for me in Destin, Florida was the 41 CIGARETTE with Mercury Racing QC4v 1100 HP engines in front of M6 drives.  So did the reality reach the imagination?  Hell yes! and then some….

First off this boat looks incredible.  The paint scheme, interior, all of the details are over the top quality that you would expect from CIGARETTE and AMG.  The boat was solid as a rock and fast.  Just cruising in the mid 70 to low 80 MPH area was smooth and solid as we just gingerly and causally overtook many sport-boats, all the other center consoles we saw,  and when conditions and other boat traffic allowed the sprint of acceleration into the 90’s was lightning fast as this boat accelerates like no other which of course we would expect given the power pushing it.

Given the really strong push of outboard powered Center Consoles in today’s market there are not very many stern drive powered boats and when you actually get the opportunity to run a boat like this it really makes me wonder why.

The Florida Powerboat Club’s Emerald Coast Poker Run is less than a month away and we’re looking forward to seeing what’s in store for us this year!

The largest summer poker run in the US is celebrating it’s 24th year along the panhandle. The 120 mile course from Destin to Pensacola is the summer run you’re not going to want to miss! With the usual poker run as well as the parties and raft up, this year is set to be bigger and better than ever.

Powerboat Nation will be at the run! Brad will again be running the big 52 SKATER with 1550 Sterlings and the new 388 Goodwin Competition Powered “Rainmaker”, as well as the 41 CIGARETTE SD AMG Edition with 1100 Mercury Turbo engines.

For years Destin has been a great time and we expect this year to be outstanding as well. Remember, if you don’t stay through the entire weekend and spend Sunday at Crab Island for all the real fun you are missing out! So don’t bail out early as you can’t leave until at least Monday to really get the entire experience of the week.

This year’s FPC’s Emerald Coast Poker Run was HOT! Another great big turnout of boaters from all over the country took part in all of the awesome events planned, from the street parade to parties and the poker run itself! Poker run teams from as far away as California, Colorado, and Idaho all had an incredible time in Florida’s Panhandle.

Wednesday kicked things off to a fantastic start with the parade and street party that saw thousands in attendance. Everything from Skaters to Sunsations, DCB‘s , Cigarettes and more turned up to really bring the meaning of the word POWER to powerboating.  PBN-Brad was running the big blue 50 Skater “Terrible II” along side the red 46 Skater “Terrible”, both with 1550 Sterlings burning C16.  After 2 days of hard running and consuming over 400 gallons of fuel both boats returned with zero issues.  Fast, strong, and dominating the water all weekend.

Thursday was the Miss Boat Week Bikini Contest (See Photos Here) at Al’s Beach Club and Burger Bar showing off nothing but the most beautiful woman in the boating world. Always a great time, the turnout was bigger than ever and the ladies brought the house down!

Friday the events fun run and after water fun  partying at the numerous hot spots around Destin and Fort Walton Beach.  If you were there we hope you didn’t miss out on the Rockin’ the Docks Captains Party at AJ’s where EVERYONE was having a great time!

The Saturday night finish at the convention center brought out the usual long fight at the table to win the event’s grand prize, a Ford Truck.

The Emerald Coast Poker Run once again proved it is an event for everyone, with two separate entry classes bringing small sport boats to the same level of the big, super powered performance, pleasure boats.

The past three or maybe four years, the Emerald Coast Poker Run brought us good times, but along with them rain and difficult weather.  Well,  this year we stuck to the plan and our persistence paid off – this outing was perfect, with a full roster of registered boats, great weather, and lots of water to run.  Team Powerboat Nation was at the helm of one of two big SKATERS loaded with 1550 Sterlings and we had a supreme time.

The boat count was almost the same as last year, but the addition of the local registrations for the Ruby Club provided lower cost entry fees which brought a bunch of new registrations and new faces.

Stu Jones of the Florida Powerboat Club presided over the captains, meetings and also coordinated all of the safety efforts which brought police and coast guard officials from all over the event area.  The registered boat count was great and the “hang arounds” who didn’t register filled in a large gap.

The Emerald Coast Foundation raises large amounts of money to benefit and support children’s charities and youth organizations in Okaloosa County. The Emerald Coast Poker Run and Boat Week events have raised over 2 million dollars to date for its cause.  The local charities also helped pitch in, with all organizers involved working tirelessly to bring us such an event. We hope all the boats that didn’t register saw what a great event it was, and will join next year in the fun for a good cause. Let the pictures speak for themselves and help convince you to put this poker run on your list.

The Luau Girls and Miss Boat Week contest certainly don’t hurt either.. (hint hint guys, time to flaunt your boat’s bling if you got it.)

Fun and poker runs aren’t the only things at stake: bring your best game face because a Ford F150 and 2015 Harley Davidson Streetglide are on the line for prizes. In addition, all money raised goes towards the Emerald Coast Foundation, a non-profit charity that invests into the future of Florida’s children. So get ready for 125 miles and six days of fun. Did we mention there’s a complimentary bar? We wish it was August already..

The Florida Powerboat Club Poker Run spans from August 18th-23rd. Registration available here.
