Myrick Coil, one half of the Performance Boat Center/Jimmy John’s offshore race duo, is officially joining the Speedboat Magazine test team this week in Lake Havasu City, AZ.

Coil, a back-to-back World Champion who drives with throttleman John Tomlinson in the 38’ Skater, will join another offshore hero, racing legend Bob Teague, in testing several boats being evaluated prior to the Monster Storm poker run in Havasu.

“To be honest with you, I’m really excited,” Coil says. “It’s an honor that a magazine as well known as Speedboat thinks that I’m good enough to give them a report on all these boats. I’m excited about testing the variety of boats they’re planning to have out there.”

Ten manufacturers have confirmed that they’ll be attending Speedboat’s annual Performance Evaluations, including Barron, Caliber 1, DCB, Domn8er, Eliminator, Hallett, KMG, Lavey Craft, Nordic and Shockwave.

“These are boats that I might not have the opportunity to test as much here in the Lake of the Ozarks,” Coil adds. “I’ve driven just about every brand, but not necessarily every model. They’ll be getting a perspective from somebody who’s been in tons of Cigarettes and big catamarans. I’m really excited to be testing with an icon like Bob Teague. It’s a real honor to be able to do this.”

Originally from Mackinaw, IL, Coil moved to the Lake of the Ozarks in 2000. He was working as an electrician on grain elevators in Central Illinois when a friend got him interested in the Shootout. The experience inspired him to take up studies at a marine training facility called the Lake Career and Technical Center in Camdenton, where he got a full education in boats. He would go on to win the 2015 Shootout Top Gun honors with a speed of 208 mph. Today he is the crew chief and shop foreman at Performance Boat Center.

About his new testing counterpart, Bob Teague says, “I’ve known Myrick for a long time. He’s a quality guy and he’s a good boat driver. There’s about three people in the country that I would ride with, and he’s one.” Who are the others? “Johnny [Tomlinson] and Randy Scism.”

Teague is owner/founder of Teague Custom Marine, the Valencia, CA-based high performance marine engine and parts shop. Established in 1972, TCM is world-famous for its big-horsepower and top-of-the line custom engine packages and aftermarket parts. As an avid boat enthusiast, Teague started the company to help afford his own boat racing program. He was part of Bob Nordskog’s racing team, which enjoyed an unprecedented race win record and the establishment of numerous world and national endurance speed marks. Teague also raced his own Grand National marathon boat, racking up an impressive list of wins and accomplishments including induction into the APBA Hall of Fame.

Teague is also a multi-time World and National champion in offshore racing and has also been inducted into the Offshore Hall of Champions.
