Last weekend’s 22nd annual Thunder In The City Poker Run started in July and finished in August. The Chesapeake City, Md., event straddled the July/August line. I covered it on scene, as I did last month during a two-week swing that included the Boyne Thunder Poker Run in Northern Michigan, New Hampshire’s HK Powersports Land and Lake Poker Run on Lake Winnipesaukee and the 1,000 Islands Charity Poker Run in Upstate New York.

But now it’s full speed ahead with the final event month of the summer, which starts Thursday for this reporter with the second-year Florida Powerboat Club Nor-Tech Owners Bahamas Run.
Of course, the Bahamas trek does involve travel by boat, which is kind of the point, right? On the other hand, you can drive all the way Norris Lake in Tennessee—home-water for this weekend’s fourth annual Rocky Top Power Run—from Sarasota, Fla., with a boat in tow.
The Rocky Top affair shares the same weekend as the second-year Saginaw Bay Powerboat Run in Caseville, Mich. The good news for both events is most of their draw comes their home states. They really don’t compete for participants.
Rounding out the trio of events this weekend is the Western New York Offshore Powerboat Association Buffalo Poker Run.
The Florida Powerboat Club swings back into action August 21-24 with Emerald Coast Powerboat Week. The Destin, Fla., affair shares dates with the Rock The River Cincinnati Fun Run on the Ohio River, which sold in record time this year.
And just a few days later—as in Wednesday, August 26—the Lake of the Ozarks Shootout gets going with the fan-favorite Shootout On The Strip street celebration and exhibit presented by Waves and Wheels.
Now that I think about it, the August event-sprint really isn’t a sprint at all. It’s a marathon.
