In response to a recent story about the upcoming HK Powersports Land and Lake Poker Run on Lake Winnipesaukee in early July, a horrified reader correctly pointed out that the New Hampshire waterway has a 45-mph speed limit. That’s something I learned firsthand when I experienced the 2025 event, which is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year, from the cockpit of a Skater 308 catamaran owned by Shane Mahieu of Upstate New York.

Even with Lake Winnipesaukee’s 45-mph speed-limit, the HK Powersports Land and Lake Poker Run never fails to attract hardware capable of running much faster.
But regardless of how addicted you are to the sensation of speed on the water, the Lake Winnipesaukee event—which benefits Easterseals of New Hampshire and surpassed $2 million in total fundraising last year—begs a question.
What’s the rush?
Lake Winnipesaukee and its surrounding countryside are gob-smackingly beautiful. For good reasons, people of means have second homes on the lakes shoreline and small islands.
All of which would become a blur 100 mph.
Combine that with event’s the relaxed vibe and the great cause served and you understand why Mahieu and his fellow HK Powersports Land and Lake Poker Run fans have no trouble slowing down.
“Not at all—Lake George, my home lake, has the same restrictions so we are used to it,” he explained. “The beauty of the area and the amazing people, along with supporting Easterseals, is what it’s all about.
“Great boating is a bonus,” he added.

Why would you want to rush this spectacular scenery?
