PBN Exclusive—‘Pure Craziness’ For Velocity Powerboats’ Scott McCormick

The owner of Velocity Powerboats in Sanford, Fla., Scott McCormick is high-energy by nature. The guy operates on pure stoke. And it serves him, especially when he’s as busy as he is now.

This 330 model center console is one of multiple intriguing builds at Velocity Powerboats.

McCormick laughed, then repeated my first question yesterday during a telephone interview.

“What’s going on these days?” he said, then laughed again. “Everything under the sun. “It’s pure craziness here.”

“So currently, I’m building a bad-ass carbon VR1 with a 600 SCI stern-drive engine and an Alcantara interior,” he continued. “That one is going to a couple in the Carolinas. I’m also building the very first 36-foot Velocity with triple 500-hp Mercury Racing outboards. That should be a 110-mph boat.”

McCormick wasn’t but finished, though he did need to pause and catch his breath before resuming. But it didn’t take long.

“I’m finishing up a bad-ass 330 center console with custom paint and a custom interior and it should run close to 90 mph,” he said. “We have six of these in production with power going up to triple 500R outboards. I have four Checkmate 24 BRX bow riders in production. One of them has an infused carbon, Kevlar and epoxy layup and will be powered by a Mercury Racing 500R outboard. I also have two 26-foot Checkmate sportboats with Mercury Racing 565 stern-drives and two 39-foot Velocity sportboats getting custom-painted.

“We are building the first 21 Checkmate Gambit with a 300R, as well as a Velocity 230 getting the new V-10 400R,  which should be super-fast and fun,” he added. “We also have a military boat-project called Dark 30 that we’re doing in conjunction with Scott Porta at Porta Products, Honda Marine, Seakeeper, Amera Trail Trailers and other vendors who are helping put this project together for the ‘Great Loop Challenge’ raising money for the National Pediatric Cancer Foundation.”
