If there is one thing that Boostpower USA in Sunny Southern California is famous for, it’s definitely custom product and engine development. These guys are one of the earliest adopters of electronic fuel injection, huge cubic inch engines, multi fuel engines, compound supercharging, and the list goes on for years.

Boostpower’s Alexi Sahagian is not one to accept the status-quo as an option. In this case, their customer had come to them looking for an alternative to his tired, aging, roots supercharged engine package.

The requirements were simple. They wanted the same strong, aggressive look of the supercharger sticking through the hatch, but wanted the latest in modern technology. Sure, you could have come up with numerous under hatch efi options, but that would have compromised the customer’s desire for the sex appeal of the engine gleaming out of the hatch.

Adding fuel injection is a snap for the Boost Power team as it is a huge part of their business. Boostpower touts that they keep virtually every modern ecu package in their dyno cell. Owner Alexi Sahagian’s touted knowledge of the pro’s and con’s and idiosyncrasies of what an ecu’s limitations are is critical to delivering drive-ability to the boater. What a engine does on the dyno is nothing like how it operates in a boat but knowing how to get a jump on the calibrations is a notch in their team’s belt.

This engine package, like so many others, started simply by pulling one of their proven, already built 565 cubic inch long blocks from the shelf as the perfect foundation. A relatively small engine package of sorts when you recognize the Boost Power team is often building 800 CID engine packages, but this engine package can deliver a big punch owner Alexi states. He says that matching the supercharger’s air speed and and fuel delivery to an engine’s size is critical to its success.

The Boostpower design team chose to combine the latest in TVS Eaton superchargers into a custom, proprietary direct port, fuel injected, intake plenum system. This package was next topped off with dual throttle bodies, a Hardin Marine Flame arrestor and 16 injectors selectable for the swap of fuel grades on the fly.

Boostpower was one of the pioneers of multi fuel engines and because of this, provides their customers with truly tuneable horsepower choices as a multi fuel engine can run on 91 or e98 fuel. Power is then available respectfully at 1200HP on the 91 octane-gas and 1700HP on e98.

Alexi is quick to point out that while all of the beautiful metal parts are a sight to see, the real magic all comes from the use of their exclusive session and layout software that run through the Infinity 8 ECU for marine use. Just as your cellphone has progressed in technology, so has the software and capabilities of today’s electronics.

Boostpower points out that today they can tune an engine with the capabilities of up to 1700HP, to virtually idle and behave with the most manageable driving and docking characteristics we could ever imagine.

One thing’s for sure. These guys never stop perfecting what we continually rave to be one of the best in the business performance packages.

We all love power boating for many reasons. There’s the boating itself, high speeds, loud engines, unique designs and craftsmanship, and championship races. There’s also the great atmosphere surrounding any power boating event. Everyone’s out to have a great time with friends watching races, showing off boats, partying, and enjoying the outdoors like it should be. That’s why we were so excited to hear about the Northwest Powerboat Association’s announcement of a new boat race to take place in Richland, WA in 2016.

The boat race will take place the first weekend of June in Howard Amon Park. The park itself is a fantastic location with long sloping grass shores and plenty of shade for spectators to watch the races and visit with friends, while barbecuing and enjoying the summer weather. The race will include a broad range of boats from the expected smaller hydroplanes to bigger names such as Jimmy Shane and J. Michael Kelly. Plenty of racing action is planned with each boat class racing twice each day, making for up to 30 races each day. We can expect boats to fly across the water in excess of 170mph, making it a truly spectacular race.

We look forward to seeing what unfolds as we get closer to the date and we hope everyone will try to make it out there! This summer is shaping up to be a fantastic boating season!

While most of us are focused on the here and now of powerboat racing, it’s always fun to take a look back and remember those who came before. It’s even more unique when you come across a name barely recognized that deserves recognition as one of the sports first champions.

John Makronin was not born into wealth or even into a world of boating general. After losing both his parents at the age of 26, coupled with his harrowing escape from death in a coal mining explosion, John decided he’d try his hand at powerboat racing. An entrepreneur at heart, he started the Ellwood Outboard Motor Shop during the mid 1940’s where he refined his knowledge and understanding of the time’s powerboats while servicing other outboards and race boats.

John’s run to the championship started with obstacles and problems like any other story. In his first race at the William Randolph Hearst Gold Cup Outboard Motor Boat Regatta in Pittsburgh he placed 5th in the second heat due to engine trouble. However, Makronin began gaining notoriety at races with his growing skills at piloting the craft and in September of 1948, he reached a top speed of 63.8mph, thereby setting a new record for Class C Hydro Outboards at the Canadian National Exhibition in Toronto. He beat out the second place driver by more than 30 seconds… Ten years later, on September 14, 1958, John put his name in the history books forever by piloting his alcohol-burning hydroplane to two new world records and capturing the Great Lakes Championship at the Zanesville, Ohio Regatta. Hitting 82mph on one stretch simply dumbfounded the spectators.

Unfortunately, John’s story did not have a fairy tale ending. After a series of engine problems at different races, he was left unable to compete in almost any contest, even being presented with a comedic award for his inability to race in a single round at one championship. John met his end on Memorial Day 1964. At the Monongahela Regatta, as he was topping 100mph on the stretch by the judges his craft hit a wave, flipping his boat and driving him through the floor. He was taken to the hospital where he died of his injuries a short time later.

A name such as his should not be swept under the rug and forgotten with time. He will continue to be one of the great boaters of the twentieth century and taking a look back will always serve as a reminder for where we came from and where we are going.

Goodwin Competition is a name you know. Whether referring to car racing, performance engine manufacturing, or power boating, Goodwin Competition tops the list when it comes to power, speed, and overall performance.

Established in 1984, Goodwin started out small developing cylinder heads, intake manifolds, and camshaft combinations, but in 1986 quickly exploded onto the front pages of the performance industry with the development of their 440 Super Stock Dodge Dart that beat the national record by two tenths of a second at Indianapolis. With the realization that Goodwin Competition had the potential to be much more than just a breathing package developer, the company quickly expanded into a full on machine shop servicing all aspects of the performance engine industry. In the Marine industry they are best know for the high performance packages used in a number of boats, such as Bill Pyburn’s latest Pure Platinum Skater.

Their current state of the art shop, completed in 2003, is set up to do virtually anything you can think of. From R&D and prototype work, to the custom machining of cylinder heads and blocks, if you can think it, they can design it. However, they don’t stop there. They also have several Dyno’s with which they tune your engine to reach its maximum potential every single second that it’s running.

Clearly one of the best and most sophisticated facilities in the nation, Goodwin Competition and the knowledgeable staff by which it is run should be the first place you turn to when in need of performance.

This week we’re up to show you best and the baddest Goodwin Competition has to offer.

Steve Emmons has been around boats doing cool, custom work for years. He and his team at Marine Performance Interiors have been providing some incredible custom boat work from his shop in Ponchatoula, Louisiana for many local loyal friends and customers and now they have expanded to bring in work from all over the U.S. and Canada.

I actually believe the name of Steve’s Company is a little misleading because they do way more than Marine Interiors. I mean they can do truck interiors and car interiors and bike seats. But wait there’s more. Top shelf fiberglass work, paint work, stereo installations and rigging that doesn’t just look good but stays in place and increases your boats performance and handling. I seen and driven first hand much of their work and it is really, really good.

The entire team at Marine Performance Interiors is a group of dedicated professionals who take huge pride in all they do and the work is flawless.

Powerboat Nation is thrilled to have Marine Performance Interiors onboard with us and we look forward to covering all of the great work coming out of this incredible Custom Boat Shop!
