The Emerald Coast Poker Run was again a great time. Our boating friends came in from all over to enjoy Boat Week. PowerBoatNation was on hand to have fun and bring back as much as we could to give all of you who couldn’t make the run a little slice of the excitement. The Florida Powerboat Club again played a significant role in making this event so good for everyone.

The event raised at least $150,000.00 for the Emerald Coast Foundation and the generosity of the people of powerboating was again over the top.

Enjoy the video and look to PowerBoatNation to continue to bring you the real life of Performance Powerboating!

PowerBoatNation was a lucky participant in the Emerald Coast Poker Run and we had nothing but great fun. The Florida Powerboat Club
always does a great job setting the events up and giving us all great coverage following. Check out all the great pictures and event highlights in the FPC Galleries.

From Mr. Stu Jones!

If you participated in last weekend’s Emerald Coast Poker Run, thanks for joining us and we don’t have to tell you how much fun this big summer event was!! Having great Boat Week parties all week long from Tuesday through Sunday, and fantastic weather day after day, made this one of the best Emerald Coast Poker Run events in recent years! Thanks to the generosity of our poker runners, the Emerald Coast Foundation was very pleased with this year’s fund-raising results, which are unofficially reported to be nearing the $ 150,000 mark!

Here’s a snapshot of all the highlights, and we’ll soon be broadcasting complete television coverage as Powerboating in Paradise TV returns to SunSports with two complete episodes featuring the 22nd Annual Emerald Coast Poker Run. Special thanks to IP Casino in Biloxi and Emerald Coast TDC for their continued support of this fantastic summer boating event!

Boat Week in Destin could be just too much fun and with so much going on. We had a pretty solid plan for theEmerald Coast Poker Run this year. I was going up to Throttle the 50 Outerlimits “Golddigger” with boat owner David Landsman and his entourage from Showcase Motorsports Poker Run Team on my flight were Larry Goldman of Xtreme Powerboats, who was Throttling a new 48 MTI with Mercury Racing 1650 QC4v’s and Randy Sweers running Denis Rias 48 MTI with Mercury Racing 1350 QC4v.

The plan seemed good but I did get off to a bad start leaving Miami. However, I did get to Destin on time and the Friday fun run/ lunch run onboard Digger was great.

This years Poker Run brought in about 160 boats registered in the Poker Run but there must have been over 400 boats during this incredible week on the water. Many people arrange boat week for their family vacation and just come to the Emerald Coast to hang out. Beautiful water, and just plain fun.

The Emerald Coast Foundation received at least $150,00.00 for their charities and giving was the thing to do by this group of boaters who see to do the same thing over and over. Immediately upon walking into the evening event well know poker runner and incredibly generous Kenny Armstrong bought all the t-shirts and apparel on the table. Then he quickly gave it all away, the quickest 5K ever spent on event T-shirts I am sure.

Also in town supporting a fleet of boats was Jason Ventura and his team from BrandX Hi Performance Marine, When one his customers boats lost a transmission I was still flying into town and when I landed I found out my wife had met up with Mark Berman of BAM marine was was driving up to deliverer a brand new BAM transmission that was loaded up in the trunk of her BMW. How far will PBN go to help out a boater as far as we have too.

THE EMERALD COAST POKER RUN IS ONLY THREE WEEKS AWAY! The 22nd Annual Emerald Coast Poker Run is shaping up to be a great event. Stu Jones from the Florida Powerboat Club reports early registration is up and the Emerald Grande is sold out. The better news is many rooms are still available at alternate locations and they have a new property onboard with great rooms rates and docks on property.

Many heavy hitters are already registered and the fleet of boats looks to be very impressive. This is a really great event for smaller boats due to the fact that all the running and card stops are located within the bay waters. The fleet is usually large and spread out very well as the event covers such a vast area and this naturally spreads the fleet of boats out all over the Destin Fort Walton beach area.

Stu told us he has assembled the largest and most direct coverage for the safely management plan than any other event. Working directly with five local jurisdictions and combined with Florida Fish and Wildlife and the U S Coast Guard provides seven agencies providing law enforcement coverage and first responder assets over the entire course.

Stu said “The torrential rains that have beat down on this area in the two previous years before this event are not occurring and the waters are what we normally expect from this area, beautiful emerald coast.” I did ask Stu for a personal guarantee that it would not rain this year and he told me absolutely zero chance of it. So with all my trust in Stu’s forecast you can count on Power Boat Nation to be back at Emerald Coast bringing you all the life and excitement of this spectacular run.

If you haven’t yet registered you can go on one to www.FLPOWERBOAT.com or call the club directly at 954.545.1414 as room and dock availability changes occur often. The Club office is open Monday-Thursday 10 am – 5 pm.

We look forward to seeing all the PBN Supporters at Emerald Coast!

Fort Walton Beach also a great choice too! Location is Close to Boardwalk truck-trailer parking lot and to all the poker run parties at Helen Back, the Swamp and the Convention center! Fort Walton Beach properties are all directly on the sandy beaches of Emerald Coast….with great rates and availability at Ramada and Destin West Condo resort!

Destin, Florida’s Emerald Coast Poker Run is what I consider to be one of the best events in the country. The Emerald Coast’s geography make it ideally suited to attract boaters from all over. The barrier islands provide a large open inland waterway where you can run far and run hard. Boats of all sizes, shapes, and HP gather and unite to support the lifestyle and the charitable contributions coordinated by the Emerald Cost Foundation. The final ingredient is the overwhelming community support. The local business owners, politicians, and the community in general really get behind this event.

Yes it rained; and yes the Saturday run was officially cancelled but that certainly didn’t damper the spirits of the powerboaters at the Saturday Night Party.

Friday at Destin was pretty good. We got the boat in the water and ran in the bay for awhile and then hit the sand bar across from the Emerald Grand for the raft up party. A spectacular fun time was had by all. Many Powerboat Nation members were on hand as we fired the T-shirt Canon into the beachgoers with help from our Emerald Girls onboard Briana Marie and Natalia.

On Saturday we waited, and then waited some more with overwhelming optimism that was unaffected by the intellectual reality of the weather RADAR. Finally Jason Ventura of BrandX called and said now or you’re on your own. He and Joey had already loaded Pure Platinum and the Formula Mother Ship on the trailer and I was the last to go. I had to give in and with help from Natalia we ran the boat in a torrential downpour from the dock at AJ’s back to the Ramp.

After we finally got back to the Emerald Grand Resort to dry out and take a long hot shower it was time for the big party. Since the rain dispersed the group and I had heard of teams leaving, I was expecting an empty room.

My expectation was just as wrong as my weather forecasting. The convention center was packed. In fact I don’t remember a Emerald Coast Poker Run with this many people in the room- a thousand or maybe 2, I don’t know but it was great to see and so we stuck around all the way till the end. You see staying to the end is something I have never done. Usually I leave because I am bored and it’s time to get back to AJ’s or Sammy’s for the real after party. But this year was different, there were tons of people and we needed to stay and watch the final table to find out who would win the Grand Prize. A Brand New 2014 Ford F150 from Gary Smiths Ford was to be won by someone and as fate would have it some of the well known poker runners had made it to the table.

Chris and Angela Bradley (40 Nor-Tech) got a seat for having the worst poker hand of the night. John Woodruff (48 MTI) had a seat as well but neither of them were at the convention center. So of course substitutes were found and Kenny Armstrong (48MTI) took the seat for John and Cass Shewbart (38 Cig) somehow got Chris and Angela seat. The card game went on for a while and after Kenny and Cass both lost some hands and Cher (47 Fountain) sold her hand to the Texas Coalition AKA “Pirate Nation” Bill Robbins (38 & 42 Fountain, 38 Donzi, 40 Nor-Tech) sat in and then “Mr. Charity” Kenny Armstrong bought the last seat for $17,000.00. So now for the final hand of the night, two fine poker runners and friends both from the Great State of Texas sat across from each other. They both drew their hands, exchanged two cards and Kenny with a pair of aces over Bills pair of queens won the new truck valued at $42,000.00.

With 142 registered boats. Great community support and at least $150,000.00 raised for charity even with Saturdays Rain out the event was a huge success.

Thanks again to Brand X Hi Performance Marine for getting us to the Emerald Coast and back home to Fort Lauderdale.

Powerboat Nation is gearing up for the Emerald Coast Poker Run! Boat Week on the Emerald Coast is already underway. Over 100 boats are currently registered for the event. There has always been great stuff at the Emerald Coast Poker Run. This picture from a few years ago when I was at the run with Larry Goldman of XtremePowerboats running the Ferrari MTI.

Big thanks to Stu and Jacky of the Florida Power Boat Club for their continued support and fantastic organization of this event. The Emerald Coast is a fantastic and unique location for a powerboating event, it’s beautiful beaches, wide open inside waterway, and centralized location attract boaters from across the nation to this ideal spot in Florida’s Northern Panhandle.

DCB Performance Boats of El Cajon, CA, has just delivered another stunning M35 Widebody, this time to repeat customer Jorge Arellano of Ocala, FL. Powered by twin dual-fuel Mercury Racing 1350/1100 engines with M8 drives, the boat was delivered to Legendary Marine in Destin, FL. It then made its debut at the Florida Powerboat Club’s Emerald Coast Poker Run over the weekend.

Arellano is not exactly lacking for boats to drive. In addition to the M35, he still owns his 2017 DCB M29 (powered by a pair of 700 SCis), along with a 2019 Talon 22SS (with a 525 EFI, the builder’s first I/O), a 2006 42′ Fountain Poker Run Edition, and a 30′ Phantom with twin outboards. And those are only the boats in his high-performance stable—you might also find the odd yacht or tugboat in his private collection.

Arellano, who originally ordered the boat in February, said he’s a repeat DCB customer because the team “really meet the criteria and beyond. One of the most amazing things about the team at DCB is that what you’re envisioning, they are able to capture it and make it real.”

When the M35 was delivered, Arellano says, it came shrink-wrapped. “So I’m pulling the shrink wrap off the boat, and people are telling me to go easy…But I was like a 3-year-old—I wanted to get to the sweet center part of the candy!”

Arellano is very enthusiastic about some of the extras he requested DCB add to the M35 that make this particular boat even more of a custom creation than usual. “I sent them a couple prop holders, as well as a solid mounting kit for an anchor. And also I created and designed a wash-down window system for the windshields because of all the salt buildup you get from the ocean. They’d never done that one before.” He also added a dual steering system at the helm for his co-pilot.

One of the best features of the DCB is how well it negotiates the rough seas offshore, according to Arellano. “If anybody doubts that the DCB can perform in the ocean, they really need to do their homework,” he says. “I have been in 5-foot seas, in the real rough stuff, and the DCB is not just a lake boat. It’s a well-built boat for every purpose you can throw at it.”

Arellano gives a huge “thank you” to the entire crew at DCB for their hard work and for making the delivery on time. “It was a very special moment for me, and I really appreciate everything that they did.” Arellano enjoys boating with his wife, Ann.

Yesterday, Powerboat Nation reported that DCB Performance Boats was en route to deliver its latest M44, Bananas XL, to repeat customer Dave Magoo of Lake Havasu City, AZ. Today, the boat saw water for the first time as Magoo and DCB’s Tony Chiaramonte launched it and took it for its maiden ride.

“During our first run, we saw 119 or 120, something like that,” Magoo told Powerboat Nation. “I’m breaking the boat in, so I’m not in any hurry to run it hard. But the boat runs really, really good. It handles incredible, and it handles better than my 35—it turns better, too. It runs so flat, it’s unbelievable.”

The Bananas XL project began when Magoo gave DCB carte blanche to build the wildest, options-heavy craft they could devise. “He kind of gave us a blank check and said, ‘Let’s see what you’re made of,’ and I think we stood up to the challenge,” says DCB’s Tony Chiaramonte. “It’s probably the most creative, crazy project we’ve ever done.”

Prior to delivery, the boat was displayed at the recent Los Angeles Boat Show.

Some of the boat’s dozens of options include:

• Twin Mercury Racing 1550/1350 dual-calibration engines capable of reaching speeds of 180+ mph in 1550 mode.
• Air conditioning on the engines to keep them cool.
• Temperature-controlled seats.
• The seats go up and down and back and forth.
• The elaborate cabin features a dropped ceiling.
• A cooler that doesn’t need ice—just plug it in, and it keeps things chilled to 37 degrees.
• RGB lights on the command screens.
• Colors on all lights may be changed, including under the tunnel and under water.
• Lights and cameras on the sea strainers.

Asked which of the boat’s features most blew his mind, Magoo said, “How it handles. The boat turns so hard, even at 30 mph. It just handles so well. It does not feel like that big a boat. It’s mind-boggling.”

Magoo added that the boat’s air conditioning system, while perfectly operational, was not needed in mid-January, even in Arizona. “It’s already ice cold out here. It was 44 degrees when we took off.”

Magoo says that he and wife Buffie plan to attend at least 11 poker runs this year, “so the boat will be going everywhere,” he says. “We’re going to do LOTO, Desert Storm, the Emerald Coast run, Thousand Islands, Texas Outlaw, Powell, Big Cat, Miami in November, and that’s just for starters.”

DCB has made their latest delivery to Stephen & Kelly Marino of Auburn, Alabama with a stunning new 2019 M35 Widebody. The Marino’s are no strangers to powerboats with a 35’ Fountain with 525’s, and then a 38’ Fountain with twin 700’s prior to ordering themselves a 2017 DCB M28R last year. Now they show their DCB loyalty with their second DCB in as many years. It will be debuted at the FPC Emerald Coast Poker Run (August 15-18th), then LOTO SuperCat Fest (August 23-25th), then Lake Cumberland Poker Run (September 6-8th), then at the DCB Regatta (September 21-22nd). This boat is packed with all sorts of goodies that show why DCB is on the bleeding edge of powerboats:

  • Mercury Racing 1100/SSM#6’s (Bling-Bling Black and Hulkin Green color combination)
  • 1.35 gears
  • 16.50 x 37 (and 39” pitch)- 18 5B Merc Pro-Finish propellers
  • Vacuum infused lamination schedule with a schedule of carbon-fiber stiffening, and balsa coring
  • Half cap (front and back) with SS rub rail powder coated metallic Charcoal Grey
  • Two Simrad NSS9 Evo3 monitors
  • Garmin 7612 in center of dash
  • Garmin GMi20’s on back of headrests
  • Garmin VIRB camera recording system, mounted to CNC machined strut mount.

23rd Annual
KEY WEST POKER RUN
November 10 – 16, 2015

It’s been more than two months since we’ve bombarded any of our club members and performance enthusiasts with email blasts, and that’s simply because we’ve been “Out of the Office” visiting all of our boating friends around the country since June!

After a fabulous FPC summer tour that traversed dozens of states and visited the top poker runs around the nation, the FPC staff staged the Emerald Coast Poker Run in the Florida Panhandle, and soon returned to our Pompano Beach headquarters to focus on the Fall and Winter season! That places our signature event, the 23rd Key West Offshore Poker Run, as a top priority for the next two months!

For this year’s Key West event, some big changes have been implemented to accommodate the ever-changing landscape in both Miami and in Key West. This email hopefully will set the record straight for all of you who plan to attend, and clear up any misconceptions about where to launch, where to stage, and where the starts are taking place.

So please talk a moment to get up to date and current on these important venue changes, so that you can hit the ground with your feet running, when you arrive in South Florida this fall!

TWO Staging locations will be utilized for the Key West Poker Run.

NORTH LOCATION
Haulover Park, North Miami (Sunny Isles Beach)

**This location will be utlized for ALL FPC events originating in Miami, and we highly recommend you familiarize yourself with this new format.

We continue to use this site as a launching location and staging for many out-of-town poker run attendees. For 2015, we will expand our operations here, with full-time staff on site for seven days, parking trucks & trailers in a secure lot, with additional lighting, gated access to the lot, and launching assistance.

POKER RUN CHECK-IN & CAPTAINS MEETING WILL OCCUR HERE!

HOTELS: Newport Beach Resort & Doubletree by Hilton, Ocean Point Resort

This staging location will now provide participants with a place to CHECK IN for the poker run..then attend the mandatory captains meeting,on the night before the run. Then on departure next morning, they can leave directly from Haulover Park, via Haulover Inlet, to start the poker run. There are (2) hotels on the menu selection when registering for the poker run. The captains meeting will be staged at the NEWPORT RESORT.

STARTING POINT for the poker run on Wednesday and Thursday departures.

SECURITY/STAFFING/LIGHTING/GATED LOT: This service is being provided by FPC, and is not paid for by Haulover Park officials. Poker runners will pay a security fee of $ 50 for this enhanced service to offset costs, and will continue to pay Miami-Dade County for the actual cost of launching permit and daily parking for trailers. These fees have not changed from previous years and are very reasonable.

Haulover Marine Center is located here also. The marina can provide minor service assistance and has two fuel docks, but does not provide transient dockage. The other marina on site, is BILL BIRD Marina at the south end of the park, which is managed by Miami Dade Parks. This office is providing a limited number of transient slips for overnight docking. Launching on the morning of the poker run is quite acceptable. Any boats in the water by 9:30am will be able to make the morning departure from Haulover.

Other Marinas Nearby: TNT Marine Center is nearby at 135th & Biscayne, therefore any boaters launching at TNT many use this staging/starting point for the poker run.

NET Result: This NEW Location provides an attractive one-stop staging location for all out-of-town poker runners, providing excellent boat launch ramps, moderately priced hotels, a poker run checkin venue with captains meeting, and support staff with 24 hr security to watch your equipment while you are away in Key West on the poker run!

SOUTH LOCATION:

Grove Harbour Marina / Coconut Grove

Hotels: Courtyard by Marriott & Ritz Carlton, Coconut Grove

GROVE Harbour Marina continues to be a Key West Poker Run sponsor and a #1 choice for staging by many poker runners on a variety of FPC Poker run events. As always, Grove Harbour will also be Checkpoint #1 for the poker run, and all boats that travel down from the North departure at Haulover Inlet, will come to Grove Harbour for their first poker run on both the Wed and Thurs departure groups.

Facilities: Grove Harbour Marina does not have a boat ramp, but specializes in custom lifting and launch by appointment, using forklifts and marine Travel lift equipment. A public boat ramp is located nearby, however no trailer parking is allowed at this ramp. The marina also has a complete service department and fuel for poker runners to stage and prepare for the run.

Caution: Please do not assume you have a spot to launch and park your truck and trailer here. Grove Harbour is a full service marina and boat yard, with monthly slip rentals and limited transient dockage, and a somewhat limited dry-land footprint to manage any excessive overflow. If you are already using Grove Harbour Marina for FPC poker runs and you have made your reservations, you will probably be safe. For all others who have NOT yet utilized Grove Harbour, you must MAKE your reservations there for dockage and/or staging. There are NO other marinas in the area that you can work with for dockage, so please be sure to make your arrangements directly with the Grove Harbour staff.

Do Not Book Poker Run- related activities at SeaIsle Marina or Biscayne Bay Marriott!

We have made it very clear in the past at Captains meetings, in our club media materials, that the management at SeaIsle Marina ended their relationship with Florida Powerboat Club, and with the NMMA, which hosts the Miami International Boat show, effective March 201.

The Miami Boat Show and the FPC’s Miami Boat Show Poker Run that followed, were that last events to be staged at this venue. The marine’s owner, Florida East Coast Realty, had chosen to make this marina strictly an annual lease-holder marina, with no transient dockage, and specifically no special events, going forward in 2015 and beyond.

FPC will therefore have NO operations at this venue, which specifically means:
NO Dockage at SeaIsle
NO hotel rooms at the Biscayne Marriott
NO poker run checkin, and No Captains meetings.
SADLY, we are very unhappy to have to move from this venue. For well over 15 years, we have utilized the Biscayne Marriott and their staff has been first class in so many ways!
We made these plans very clear to our members and participants in the past, and we urge you to make any necessary changes to your agenda if you have already made any plans directly with this property.

CLOSING SEA ISLE MARINA TO FPC EVENTS?: These owners are free to do as they please with this marina…after all it’s a free enterprise world we live in.
That said, if you are unhappy with their decision to essentially “kick out” the poker run, just call or write to them with your opinions.
