New owners Michael and Nikki Pierce from Baton Rouge turned heads this week with their recently acquired 388 Skater “Pure Platinum” previously owned by Bill Pyburn.  Michael has been looking for a new cat for a long time and when the prospect of buying THE Pure Platinum came along the search was over! They brought the high horsepower SKATER to Key West this year and it’s looking better than ever! With tons of accessories and upgrades as well as massive Goodwin Competition Power there’s no denying that Pure Platinum is one of the biggest, baddest powerboats to have ever been built.

For some, the thought of the acquisition of Chief Engines by Precision Power of Michigan brought doubt as to what the future for the two companies might look like. Well to the naysayers, take this. Truth be told, the companies strength is on a strong growth trajectory and the brand’s original customers are the reason why.

On our recent trip we witnessed the Michigan powerhouse filling a trailer with 6 engines and two #6 outdrives en route to a few south Florida clients. The company’s offerings are diverse, as (2) of the engines were 525 Merc’s, while another two consisted of monster 700 cubic inch PSI EFI supercharged engines en route to their new home in a 46 Skater with a dual map software program allowing 1100 horsepower on 91 octane or flip a switch and 1550 horsepower on 116 fuel. The remaining two are infamous Chief Engines Twin Turbos destined for a racing application that produce north of 1800 horsepower.

President of Precision Power Ben Wiersum says that the trips are common place, as they are basically offering a service picking up just as many engines to bring back to their home base of West Michigan for rebuilding. Ben points out that the clients are thrilled with the high service level that they have committed to offer. He also points out that all hands are on deck preparing for the upcoming Key West event and Chief will have a display at this year’s Florida Powerboat Clubs Poker Run Village and welcomes all to stop by and say hello!

We got tons of great aerial shots and closeups of everyone throttling up as they passed us in our PBN Cigarette and pulling up to the docks at Gilbert’s to the sights and sounds of so much power and performance made it clear that this poker run is going to be the best yet!

Everyone had a great lunch and drinks, mingling with fellow boaters and friends before heading out on the next leg of the run to Poker Run Village and the Conch Republic.

Tony Canale of Canale Marine, a Multi-National and World Champion Offshore Racer has been appointed COO of Sonic Powerboats!  Canale Marine in Buford, Georgia is an invaluable addition to the team at Sonic and will surely benefit the company in numerous ways both on and off the water.

Sonic is busy building boats and the addition of Tony and his resources is a step in the right direction. The new 36 Ocean Spirit Center Console has been a big hit for them and two more are nearing completion for delivery, one to Oregon and the other off to Massachusetts.

Sonic has been a long time solid brand in the performance boat world.  We were recently fortunate enough to be able to talk to some of the over 20 full time employees currently at Sonic. Chief Rigger, Jason Bonowicz has been in the industry for over 19 years, 4 of which have been with Sonic, and he is fully Mercury Certified. Plant Manager, Bruce Carvalho has been with Sonic for an incredible 28 years, and the all around everything man Ravi Bishundat has been there 18 Years.  These long term, talented teams members are a testament to how solid this company really is.

Sonic is all in for this years Key West Poker Run and signed on as a major Florida Powerboat Club Sponsor. Two 32 Super Cats rigged with Mercury Racing 400R’s will be at Key West, and another is nearing completion with 565’s, turning IMCO SCX Drives. The newest 32 Super Cats at Key West this year is being offered with incredibly aggressive pricing and a session with the Tres Martin Performance Boat School is included!

Sonic has some other surprised coming and a surprise to us was just how custom they will build a boat for each customer.  Stay tuned for much more to come!

Today is a huge day in Miami! The entire staff of the Florida Powerboat Club is slammed, responding to the last minute calls from club members and preparing for the nightly captains meetings for the Wednesday and Thursday departures.  At Grove Harbor Marina, owner Alan Lima was as calm and cool as usual while his staff hustled to get boats in the water and assist poker runners with all they needed.

To the north, the Xtreme Powerboats Team, headed by Larry Goldman, was at the brand new and MASSIVE Haulover Marine Center busy with many more boats coming in, and it was all hands on deck as a steady stream of boats from all over the country came in to be readied for the run.

Keep coming back to Powerboat Nation for all the latest photos and VIDEOS from the run! We’re going to be your #1 source for live photos, videos and news from Key West. Keep an eye on our live media feed for the latest!

We’ve speculated for over a year that Mercury Racing was working on designing an LS Small Block that would change the performance industry forever, and it’s finally here! This week on the first day of the famed SEMA, Mercury Racing unveiled their brand new 775 horsepower LS Small Block, and it’s everything we ever wanted it to be.

The new SB4 7.0 is a 7.0 Liter automotive aftermarket crate engine that is manufactured in house, naturally aspirated, and features Mercury Racing’s exclusive aluminum four-valve cylinder heads and dual overhead camshaft valve train. Able to produce an unheard of 775 HP at 75000 RMP, this small block is simply put, a beast!

The four valve design has several benefits over your traditional LS pushrod layout some of which are improved intake and exhaust flow, reduced stresses, smooth high RPM operation, and increased all around efficiency.

Mercury Racing also followed the unveiling with the announcement of the exclusive distributor for the one-of-a-kind engine. SpeedKore Performance Group of Grafton, Wisconsin has been officially named the exclusive distributor for the U.S. and their status and presence in the high quality aftermarket performance sector makes the partnership a no brainer.

We hope you get a chance to see the engine itself currently on display at SEMA, but if not we’re sure you’re going to see a lot more of them in the near future!
