Yearly Archives: 2020

When the Miami International Boat Show invades the Sunshine State Feb. 13-17, the in-water docks at the Miami Marine Stadium Park & Basin on Virginia Key will be robust with big-muscle machinery. Powerboat Nation asked many of the high-performance exhibitors which models they plan to show off at the 2020 edition of the show. Here’s what they told us.

Cigarette Top Gun.

CIGARETTE

The Opa-Locka, FL, builder of go-fast vee hulls is notoriously tight-lipped about its big reveals, but usually has some astounding surprises—including at least one head-turning theme boat—ready for Miami. Expect Cigarette Racing to have at least one of each of its models on display, including a Top Gun, 42X, Marauder, GTS, GTO, Huntress and the super-sized 59’ Tirranna. For what it’s worth, the company is rumored to be debuting two new models this year, and we’re just as excited to find out what it is as you are.

DEEP IMPACT

Miami is Deep Impact’s hometown. The builder of go-fast center console vees is planning to display a 399 Sport powered by quad 450R outboards, and one 369 Sport with triple 350s. “We will be doing sea trials by appointment,” according to sales manager Tim Gallagher.

HCB 53′ Sueños.

HCB

HCB Center Console Yachts will have three “sea trial” models on the water at Miami Marine Stadium: the 39 Special (with triple F350 Yamaha outboards), the 42 Siesta and the 53 Sueños (with quad Yamaha 425 outboards). In addition, five additional versions of those models will be featured at the Miami Yacht Show.

Hustler 39 Shotgun.

HUSTLER

The Calverton, NY, muscleboat builder says it’ll be showing a 29 Shotgun (with twin Mercury Racing 400R outboards) and a 39 Shotgun (with triple 450Rs) this year. The 29 Shotgun is an all-new boat for Hustler; last year, the 29 Rockit was the smaller of the two boats they had on display.

Donzi 41GTZ.

ICONIC MARINE GROUP
(FOUNTAIN & DONZI)

The Washington, NC, builder of Fountain and Donzi brands will be displaying the following boats at its on-water display:

OUTERLIMITS

Rhode Island’s Outerlimits always has a can’t-miss exhibit in Miami. For 2020, the boys are showing off an SL44 vee, the first to be built with Mercury Racing’s naturally aspirated, 9.0-liter 860 stern drives. “We’re pretty excited about this package,” says sales manager Dan Kleitz. “It should be a perfect setup for our 43 and 44.” The boat is owned by Cass Shewbart of Texas (his second Outerlimits after his famous 47 GTX, XXX: Disturbing the Peace. The SL44 features a unique center entrance cabin layout with separate driver and passenger bolsters. At the time of this writing, Outerlimits was also working feverishly to try to bring a new 46’ carbon canopy cat powered by MR 1550 engines.

Skater 368 catamaran.

SKATER

The world-famous manufacturer of performance catamarans from Douglas, MI, will be bringing a 2020 438 powered by twin Mercury Racing 1550/1350s called G Force, as well as a 2020 368 powered by twin Mercury Racing 450R outboards.

• 32 CCX with twin Mercury Racing 400R outboards.
• 40 CCX with triple Mercury Racing 450R outboards.

Both boats will feature new interior styling, according to PBC’s Brett Manire. “We did a relaunch of the 32 CCX in Fort Lauderdale with a few changes, and liked them so much that we made the same interior changes to the 40 CCX. The boat is now way more functional, with high quality and cutting edge features,” he says.

Wright Performance 420.

WRIGHT PERFORMANCE

Also at the Performance Boat Center booth: two boats in the Wright Performance line that PBC developed with Doug Wright Designs, the 360 (powered by twin 400Rs) and the 420 (powered by twin 450Rs). The 420 debuted at the 2019 Miami boat show.

Mercury Marine presented its 2019 Customer Satisfaction Index (CSI) Award to more than 250 boat dealerships that embody the highest levels of service, according to customer evaluations.

“We continually strive for service excellence and to ensure that our dealers share that same vision,” said Jim Helmick, Mercury Marine director of field service development and operations.

Mercury Marine measures consumers’ satisfaction with the service performed on their Mercury outboard or MerCruiser sterndrive and inboard products according to several dimensions of the experience. The company asks customers who have recently sought service from a Mercury‑authorized dealer to rate their overall satisfaction with the dealership’s service and to indicate the likelihood of their returning to the dealership in the future.

“As the ratings are determined by customer feedback, this award is considered one of the industry’s most prestigious,” Helmick said.

To be eligible for the award, dealerships must be a Mercury Premier Level or Certified Service Level dealer and must have maintained a score of greater than 94 out of a possible 100 for 12 consecutive months. Mercury began the program in 2006.

The CSI score for each dealership is measured and monitored by Mercury Marine. After warranty work has been completed, Mercury sends out a Service CSI survey to the consumer, asking the consumer to rate the service received.

“Customer service is key to remaining competitive in the evolving marine marketplace and to retaining long‑term customer relationships,” said Helmick. “The dealers who achieve the Service CSI Award have shown themselves as the benchmark to the industry, delivering world‑class service support and providing our customers with the service that they expect.”

Headquartered in Fond du Lac, WI, Mercury Marine is a world-leading manufacturer of marine propulsion systems. A $3 billion division of Brunswick Corporation (NYSE: BC), Mercury designs, manufactures and distributes engines, services and parts for recreational, commercial and government marine applications, empowering boaters with products that are easy-to-use, extremely reliable and backed by the most dedicated customer support in the world with 10,000 service points globally.

DCB Performance Boats has delivered a 2020 M33R Widebody powered by Mercury Racing 450R outboards to South Carolina native Scott James, who has been enjoying the boat in Lake Havasu for the past few days.

The boat, which features a 9’7” beam, features STR Brackets (courtesy Shaun Torrente Racing), custom matching carpet kit with shaved diamonds in the fabric, Phase III gelcoat scheme and Mercury Zero Effort DTS shifter/throttle. The M33R also sports a six-person intercom system with VHF boat-to-boat communication (aka the “DCB Channel”).

Although he has extensive seat time in both vee bottoms and catamarans—his previous performance boat was a 35 Fountain—the DCB is the first cat he’s owned.

“These sport cats have really taken off,” James says. “And all of the torque and power that you get out of these 450s are so impressive, as well as the fuel efficiency. It just seemed to make a lot of sense.”

James says he was attracted to the DCB because of the superior workmanship, fit and finish, etc. “The quality is just amazing. These guys are on top of everything,” he says. “They build an outstanding boat. I’m blown away by the attention to detail and the whole build process. It was absolutely incredible.”

James traveled to the facility during the build a couple of times and says he was impressed by the process. “It’s like building a custom home,” he says, “right down to the color of the thread I wanted to the upholstery and fabrics and all the different panels sections. They even went the extra mile on things I hadn’t even thought about, like adding more LEDs underneath the boat.”

Now that he’s had some time to drive the boat on Lake Havasu, prior to having it transported back east, he couldn’t be happier by the DCB’s performance. “It’s mind blowing—just unbelievable,” he says. “The boat is so stable and so smooth. The power and midrange punch of the 450s is truly extraordinary, and it gets up to the top end real quickly. I hate to overuse the term, because you hear it so often, but it runs like it’s on rails. And it turns really tight and really smoothly, and handles so well.” He says he expects to see a top speed of around 125 mph.

Some of the other features of the boat include:

• 100% Alcantara interior with matching under cuddy, as well as a full bed pad.
• Half cap with stainless steel rubrail.
• Vacuum Infused Resin (VIR) process, balsa-cored, with aggressive carbon-fiber and carbon-kevlar.
• Three Garmin 8612 monitors.
• Mercury Vessel View 5” (C-Zone).
• Dual Garmin VIRB HD camera system mounted to windshield strut
rear view mirror.
• Isotta Carlotta steering wheel.
• Two Garmin GMi20s in back of the headrests.
• Interior Rigid LED lighting package (mood lighting, courtesy lighting, LED cupholders, underwater lighting).
• Stage III stereo, including Fusion head unit, two JL Audio amplifiers, 10 JL Audio M6 midrange LED speakers and two 12” JL Audio W3 subwoofers.
• Billet foot shower.
• Billet swimstep with SeaDek.
• Extreme custom trailer, tandem-axle with custom two-tone chrome 18” fuel rims, stainless steel fenders, triangular drive guard, courtesy ladder, undercarriage LED lighting package, etc.

Stu Jones, head of the popular Florida Powerboat Club, is resurrecting a poker run that dropped off the schedule a decade ago.

Known as the Spring Key West Poker Run, the event was once a quite popular part of the FPC calendar years ago, attracting more than 40 powerboat teams and featuring an agenda that was completely different to its sister event—the November Key West Poker Run. For 2020, the March 19-22 getaway will be back, with an entry roster of under 50 boats and a more laid-back agenda, according to Jones. It will include a visit to Boca Grande Key (“a place that we’ve been locked out of for over probably five or six years,” he says), and lodging at the Hyatt Centric Key West Resort and Spa. The four-day adventure will feature a Thursday departure from Miami and a Sunday return.

“I was waiting to see how we hit the numbers on the November run to Key West,” Jones told Powerboat Nation. “When we hit record attendance, I realized that key West is such a popular destination for boaters that it seems a shame that we would only go there once a year.”

Jones says he’s committed to growing the Spring Key West Poker Run event for the foreseeable future. “It will allow participants to enjoy something that’s a little more casual and less stressful than its November counterpart, with slightly better rates, not as much demand and competition for dockage and marinas,” he says.

Jones said one major highlight of the spring run will be the opportunity to take his club members on an organized fun run to Dry Tortugas National Park, including Fort Jefferson, the largest brick masonry structure in the Americas. “It’s one thing that we’ve never done in our club’s 27-year history,” he says. “Everyone asks me about it during our November run, but there have always been too many moving parts, too many other things happening. But the spring run will have a completely different, more relaxed format, and with an extra day, we’ll have the opportunity to take optional local boating trips.”

Meanwhile, Jones is about to embark on his group’s Winter Poker Run (Jan. 24-26), which will take them from North Miami to Faro Blanco Resort on Marathon Key.

Jones said that one consequence of his group’s growth and success has been that members need to plan further in advance. “There’s no such thing as a last minute booking anymore,” he observes. “You can’t just call me a week before the poker run because the weather looks good and say you want to go. It doesn’t work like that anymore.”

The new normal, he explains, suggests that members start planning their poker runs at least 120 days out, with a 60-day deadline that locks in the lowest event and hotel rates. “At the 30-day deadline, rates go up and there’s no guarantee that the participant will get the room or the slip that they request,” Jones says.

Race World Offshore President Larry Bleil has revealed his tentative schedule for an expanded 2020 offshore race season.

After a three-race 2019, during which he mounted races in Dunkirk, NY, Clearwater, FL and Key West, FL, Bliel says he is adding two new races in the Southern USA that will kick off his RWO season in the spring. The first will be in Orange Beach, AL (April 17-19), followed by a June event on Atlanta’s Lake Lanier. Although the dates may change to a week before or a week following, Bleil said the tentative dates are June 12-14. These races will be followed by Dunkirk (July 10-12, dates tentative), Clearwater (Sept. 25-27), and finally the Key West Offshore World Finals (Nov. 8-15).

He said he hopes to see his schedule continue to expand in upcoming years.

“It keeps steadily moving along,” Bleil tells Powerboat Nation. “We’re going after both new sites and sites that have been raced before. We’re excited about bringing races back to Orange Beach. As for Atlanta, we’re looking forward to get something going at Lake Lanier. We want to keep our sport growing into several areas and get more people involved in it.”

The 2019 season saw Race World Offshore take the reins of the Key West World Championships after Superboat International organized it for many years. Bleil succeeded in bringing a renewed vigor to the event and a determination to see it more accessible to both fans and participants.

Pending any reshuffling of dates, the tentative RWO season will be as follows:

April 17-19: Orange Beach, AL

June 12-14: Atlanta, Lake Lanier (tentative)

July 10-12: Dunkirk, NY (tentative)

Sept. 25-27: Clearwater, FL

Nov. 8-15: Key West

Boat show anglers looking for the perfect and affordable fishing boat this season will be anxious to check out Lund’s new 1650 Angler SS (side steering). The new 1650 Angler is strategically targeted for first-time boat buyers and has an aggressive entry price of $14,897 and includes 50 HP Mercury engine and a ShoreLand’r swing tongue trailer for optimal garage storage. In addition, there will be a free travel cover available for purchases made during the boat show season.

The 1650 Angler has an overall length of 16 feet 5 inches and comes with a wide 80” beam to maximize space for seating in the cockpit. CP Performance / Hardin Marine made the trek across the country from Florida to attend the 64th Annual Los Angeles Boat Show

The 64th Annual Los Angeles Boat Show opened it doors yesterday,  January 9, promptly at noon to an eager crowd waiting at the gates to be let in. Once inside of the famed Pomona Fairplex, where the show has been held since 2017, the masses were treated to sensory overload of new boat bling, the latest technology and the hottest performance boats on the West Coast–most of which were under the single roof known as the High Performance Powerboat Hall.

The media group and Southern California boat show producer Duncan McIntosh Company acquired the Los Angeles Boat Show from the National Marine Manufacturers Association in 2016 and moved it from the Los Angeles Convention Center in downtown L.A. to the home grounds of the L.A. County Fair for its inaugural show three years ago. Since then, the exhibitors, as well as the crowds have been steadily growing–attracting new exhibitors and ones returning from the heyday of the NMMA.

The entrance of the first building of four at the Pomona Fairplex

This year saw the repeat appearance of the marine parts and accessories giant CP Performance and sister company Hardin Marine who came all the way from Palm Coast, Florida. In their booth located in the first (and largest) building was a dazzling display of headers, exhaust manifolds, sea strainers, gauges, steering wheels, any any other item that any boat might need… or want. After nearly two decades of displaying at the show, the company still sees the value of coming to L.A.

” We come because it’s a huge enthusiast market. ‘So cal’ was the innovator of custom boats and being the largest specialty supplier means we’re here to support all of the boaters.”

CP Performance / Hardin Marine display their wares in L.A.

The performance industry powerhouse Mercury Racing also saw the value of appearing in Los Angeles. General Manager Stuart Halley, National Sales Manager Kevin Skiba and Project Manager Nick Petersen all made the trip from their icy home base of Fond du Lac, WI to join in on the California fun.

“This show has gotten more and more popular, so we’ve been coming out for the last couple years with just ‘boots on the ground,'” admits Skiba. “We see a lot of our boat building partners out here so we decided we wanted to support them and showcase our products, as well.”

The 1350 / 1100 dual calibration, M8 sterndrive package

Most of the West Coast manufacturers have all claimed/reclaimed their territories in Pomona, reminiscent of the “good ol’ days,” pre-2008. The El Cajon builder DCB Performance Boats brought their impressive M35 Widebody with twin Teague Custom Marine 1450 supercharged engines, a new M33R outboard cat with twin Mercury Racing 450Rs, a pair of open and closed bow M28R with Merc 400Rs and 450Rs respectively and an M31 sterndrive boat.

Eliminator Boats of Mira Loma has five of their most popular models on the floor, ranging from their family-friendly Fundeck to their reimagined 36′ Speedster with twin Mercury Racing 1350/1100s–the largest vessel in the company’s lineup. They also have their merchandise booth in full effect, for any and all Eliminator swag. Company owner Jake Fraleigh enjoyed the company’s very busy 50th Anniversary year in 2019 and expects an even better, busier 2020.

Nordic Boats and Hallett Boats of Lake Havasu City, AZ moved in to their usual massive square footage space to accommodate all of their eight various boats. Debuting yesterday was the all-new Nordic 48′ Vee bottom and the 31′ flat deck catamaran with a pair of Mercury Racing 400Rs. Company General Manager Thane Tiemer reports that the company had a record-setting day yesterday, with the most number of deposits taken for new boat sales.

Interceptor Boats is making a big push in 2020 to make big waves on the water. Bringing their 28′ Kool Kat Deck Boat, 26′ Kool Kat Deck Boat and their latest creation–the 2500 vee bottom. General Manager Troy McIntosh has been hard at work setting the company back on a positive course and following up on all of the customer service issues that was left for him since taking on the position last April. Check out their offerings.

Lavey Craft Motorsports brought their offshore race-pedigreed 29′ NuEra vee bottom, which raced (and excelled) in the Factory 1 class in the early 2000’s. Fast forward to 2020, the same hull can be upgraded with all of the current bells and whistles available to new boat builds–while still enjoying the rough water capabilities that the NuEra provides. In addition, the Corona-based builder Chris Camire also brought their RPM 26′ Redline catamaran, powered by a single Merc 700SCi. Lavey Craft is also well respected in the off-road world since they introduced their custom fiberglass, gelcoat body kits for side-by-side OHVs.

Shockwave Boats of Corona, CA had the most wide-ranging variety of the performance fleet–from jet boats vees to their larger 29′ Magnatude, from deck boats to fast cats, all were well-represented. Company owner Bob Anderson has managed to stay busy building boats, not missing a single boat show–even through the downturn of 2008, and he credits good, honest work and his loyal following of the Shockwave family for his continuing success.

Cobra Performance Boats of Montclair, CA brought a trio of their most popular models–a pair of 23 Razors and 280W Python deck boat. Company owner Jeff Bohn continues to build his impressive reptilian brand for the enjoyment of his proud fleet of boat owners.

A newer company with a long boat building history would be Barron Boats of Azusa, CA. If the name sounds familiar, it should. It was the famous surname attached to Hallett Boats for decades. Company founder Jerry Barron started the company in 2017 with their beautiful 290S sport deck boat and has now debuted the all-new 19′ 190 RS ski machine, that can be equipped with your choice of outboard, V-drive or jet power. “So I designed and built this boat just to kind of go back to my childhood a little bit,” Barron says. “Nobody has come up with anything this small, that’s this sexy and bitchin’ in 30 years. I’m just trying to find a nerve with the public—something that they don’t have that they’re looking for.” The company also has a new center console in the works that should be coming later this year.

Other notables that are displaying at the show this year are Eddie Marine of Rancho Cucamonga with their custom line of boat accessories and parts; Caliber 1 that brought their 230 Velocity; Howard Boats; Essex Boats (who has returned to the show after a long hiatus); popular online boating website River Dave’s Place – despite being an L.A. Boat Show regular, by way of his annual Boat Show reports posted to his site, 2020 is Dave Johnson’s first time displaying as an exhibitor at the show.

The Los Angeles Boat Show continues today through Sunday evening, with tickets available at the ticket booth for $15.00 each (military discount of $5.00 with ID) and free admittance for children under 12. The Pomona Fairplex is located at 1101 W. McKinley Ave., Pomona, CA 91768.

Fountain Powerboats of Washington, NC—part of the Iconic Marine Group—has modified its popular 34 CC center console fish boat to appeal to the sport-boat market. The same hull is now available as the 34 SC (Sport Console). Explains Fountain COO Jeff Harris: “It’s our effort to kind of bring a sport boat to a center console,” he says. “It’s got really striking upholstery and a whole new graphics package. It’s designed to be kind of a poker run boat.”

The first 34 SC out of the mold, shown here, is powered by twin Mercury Marine 400 Verados (top speed in the low 60s), but triple Verado 300 engine configurations are possible, or twin 450Rs, depending on what the customer desires. “You can have it powered to easily get it into the 70s,” Harris says.

The boat features an enclosed head/sink below the console, as well as SeaDek flooring (both under foot and on top of the T-Top, along with the Fountain logo). In addition, the rear seat is an entirely new seating concept from the 34 CC, with “proprietary” molded-in seats for three individuals. Likewise, the forward lounge seats directly in front of the center console have also been redesigned, and has additional storage beneath them, and the bow seating has also been lengthened and modified to make sitting in the bow more comfortable.

The 34 SC will be displayed by Big Thunder Marine at the Overland Park Boat Show in the Lake of the Ozarks Jan. 23-26, after which it will be showcased at the Miami Boat Show Feb. 13-17.

First look at DCB's 2020 Los Angeles Boat Show display.
For the 64th year running, the Los Angeles Boat Show will promote on-the-water fun, with a healthy dose of muscle machinery on display at the “High Performance Powerboat Hall.” The Southland’s leading go-fast powerboat manufacturers will be exhibiting their latest beauties with their flashy paint jobs, plush interiors and powerful engines. Here’s a sneak preview of what you can expect to see when the doors open at Pomona’s Fairplex facility on Thursday, Jan. 9:

Cobra’s 280W Python.

COBRA BOATS

Montclair, CA-based Cobra will be displaying one of its 280W Pythons and two 230 Razors. Cobra has made the decision to shows these boats minus power. “We didn’t want to dedicate a specific motor, and give anybody a reason not to buy the boat,” explains General Manager Hernando Rodriguez. “Base motors are base motors, but people almost always upgrade. They’re going without power so people can pick their power.”
The 230 Razor has always been a great seller for Cobra, and “we wanted to go to the show with some more affordable boats that are on special,” Rodriguez says. “They’re all for sale—none of them are customers’ boats.”
Nordic’s new 48′ vee bottom, seen in the construction phase.
NORDIC / HALLETT
Nordic Boats of Lake Havsau City, AZ, will combine both Nordic and Hallett brands in one massive booth comprising numerous models. Here’s what they’ll be displaying:
